6th Grade Business Math Projects
In the 6th grade curriculum, students learn about entrepreneurship and what it takes to make a successful business.
They study aspects of the global market, exploring where items that they personally use and and wear on a daily basis come from. They talk about consumerism, and the power the consumer has when making their purchase decisions, such as supporting small businesses and environmentally-friendly products. They also crunch a lot of numbers, working with decimals and percentages to calculate interest, tax, and profit.
To put all of this knowledge into practice, the 6th graders developed their own business plans this winter and created products to sell to the community. There was an incredible amount of thought, creativity, hard work, and ingenuity that went into these products.
I’d love to share some of what they created with you all here.

Natalie Norman grew up in Wisconsin, enjoying the fireflies and monarch butterflies that danced about the fields behind her home. She always had a deep appreciation for the natural world and eventually became a naturalist at a wildlife sanctuary in her hometown of Green Bay. She completed her BA in Humanistic Studies and Environmental Education at UWGB and then continued to fulfill her dreams of working with both nature and children in various settings, including a botanical garden, community garden and outdoor school program called Trees for Tomorrow. Her love for outdoor adventures led her to the Pacific Northwest, where she settled new roots in 2000. Natalie led cross country ski trips, nature camps and kayak outings for several years through Portland Parks & Recreation and then transferred into her classroom teaching career.Natalie received her Waldorf teaching certificate from the Micha-el Institute in Portland and found the perfect school to share her passions for lifelong learning-Cedarwood! She is now in her 15th year at Cedarwood, taking on many roles in leadership and committee work over the years. She has continued to expand her educational training by completing the five-year Spatial Dynamics program, and she also leads classes and offers lectures at AWSNA and NWAIS conferences, as well as the Micha-el Institute.
Natalie recently promoted her eighth grade class of 2020. It was a bittersweet closing of another incredible journey with a group of students, but she has jumped right back into the middle school to guide the class of 2023 into their adolescent years.
When Natalie isn’t teaching, you can find her at an early morning yoga class, hiking in the gorge with her wife, Sandra, or snuggling up with her kitties and reading a good book.
