Passover: Jewish Festival of Liberation

0-3.jpg

The story of Passover is the telling of the Jewish people leaving Egypt as slaves and entering Israel as free people. The Seder is the traditional meal eaten on the first and second nights of Passover. The Seder plate includes six special foods that symbolize the Jewish efforts towards liberation, the pain of slavery, and the anticipation of a new life.

 Chad Gadya

Traditionally in Hebrew, this song is sung at the end of the Passover Seder, the Jewish ritual feast that marks the beginning of the Jewish holiday of Passover.

Haroset Recipe

Haroset is sweet and tasty. It is made with apples, cinnamon, honey, and grape juice (traditionally made with sweet wine....manischewitz for adults if you please). It's best chilled or served at room temperature.

Ingredients

6 apples, peeled, cored, and chopped

1 cup finely chopped walnuts

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

1 tsp white sugar

3 1/2 tsps honey

1/3 cup grape juice

Place the apples and walnuts into a large bowl. Mix together the cinnamon and sugar, sprinkle over the apples. Stir in the honey and sweet wine. Serve immediately, or refrigerate until serving. Eat with matzah, or not!

Passover Game: Find the Afikoman

Traditionally, a piece of matzah is split into pieces at the beginning of the Passover seder. One of the pieces is wrapped in a cloth napkin and hidden around the house. At the conclusion of the seder and meal, the children search the house until they find the hidden afikoman. The finder is given a "prize". Make this game your own. Hide a piece of matzah around the house for your little one to find.
