Cedarwood Waldorf School is committed to the process of actively becoming an antiracist school.
We at Cedarwood Waldorf School are heartbroken and outraged at the recent deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, and too many others who have been killed before. We extend our support and solidarity to all families who have suffered under the oppression of systemic racism, and are committed to bearing witness to what is happening in the world around us and within our own community, and to uphold the dignity of the human being.
We acknowledge that racism is not a problem that only exists in other places. It is prevalent throughout American society and institutions and has a deep history in Oregon. It is a problem that we at Cedarwood are committed to doing more to address. We are striving to create an environment free from racism, hate, and intolerance while providing space in which each student, family, and staff members feels included and valued.
We commit to the process of actively becoming an antiracist school. We know this is challenging work, and we won’t do it perfectly but will strive to grow in our beliefs and practices and prioritize racial justice in our work, starting with:
Hiring an outside consultant to evaluate our current policies, procedures, and curriculum
Reconvening our faculty & staff study groups on unconscious bias and antiracism work.
We know this is just a start and there is much work to be done, including listening, reflecting, and actively creating an environment in which our Black, Indigenous, and community members of color can thrive. We are committed to implementing the best of the nurturing spirit of Waldorf education, using our heads, hearts, and hands to do better. Together we will work to make this a better world for all people to live in.
