Why You Shouldn't Miss Journey Through the Grades
In many Waldorf schools it is a tradition to offer a Journey Through the Grades to parents and prospective families at least once a year. It is a way for adults* to have a peek into the journey that our students and their teachers embark on in 1st grade and complete with the 8th grade promotion ceremony when it is time to transition to high school. The students and their teachers journey through fairy tales and knitting to fractions and Native American stories and on around the bend into zoology, botany, geometry, further along to Ancient Rome, Ancient India, and the Renaissance making their way towards organic chemistry, US history, and algebra. The magic of a Waldorf elementary school education can be discovered in the course of the Journey Through the Grades evening when you are able to experience a taste of the journey too.
At past Journey Through the Grades evenings, parents have enjoyed playing with sand trays in Grade 1, playing a Spanish circle game in Grade 3, creating shapes with a compass in Grade 6, and doing a Chemistry experiment in Grade 8. My daughter loved it when I came home and shared how it was challenging for me to do the Spanish game she knows so well and this made for a sweet connection as she saw her own strengths in a new way. This is the kind of engaged, experiential learning our students enjoy each day, but parents have only one chance each year to join the Cedarwood classrooms as students and experience different grade levels, all in an hour and a half!
Teachers are eager to share their lessons and happy to answer your questions.
Whether you are a parent newer to Cedarwood and Waldorf education, a long-time parent who has attended in the past, or perhaps even a Waldorf alum yourself, it will be a wonderful evening experiencing the best of Waldorf education, live and in-person at last (the last in-person Journey Through the Grades at Cedarwood was in January 2020). With gratitude to our faculty and their amazing online teaching, we are all looking forward to being together in the building for this educational and fun evening.
Please join us for this experiential evening on January 25th, 2024 from 7 - 8:30 pm and bring your friends! You can RSVP here for Journey Through the Grades.
*This event is geared toward parents and caregivers, children get to enjoy these activities every day!
