Like Waldorf schools all over the world, we will honor the Martinmas festival with our annual Lantern Walk together.

As dark nights grow longer and the air turns chill, our Lantern Walk will be a warm & cherished gift to carry in our hearts.

From France comes the legend of St. Martin, who as a young man passed under an archway in the city of Amiens. There he discovered a poor beggar huddled under the archway, wearing only rags. The young man was shivering with cold and, upon seeing him, young Martin took his own cape from his shoulders, tore the garment in half, and covered the poor man to warm him. The following night, Martin had a dream in which he saw an angel wearing the same piece of his cape. The experience confirmed to him his devotion to all mankind, regardless of their station in life.

Martin went on to become the patron saint of beggars and outcasts. He was known for his gentleness, his unassuming nature, and his ability to bring warmth and light to those who were previously in darkness.

This year, we will be bringing the warmth and light of our Lantern Walk to our very own Lair Hill Park. We are excited to carry a hundred twinkling lights through the neighborhood that Cedarwood calls home.

Children in Pre-Kindergarten - Grade 3 will make their lanterns at school, and are welcome to join any walk. We ask that your family arrives in reverence a few moments before your walk begins to make this evening special for our whole community.

friday, November 8
5:15 - 7:00 pm at Lair Hill Park

We invite children in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 3 to meet us in Cedarwood’s courtyard; from there, we will set out to sing lantern songs as we journey into the night.

Please refrain from talking during the walk, so as not to interrupt the reverence of the evening. We ask that all children stay with their parents throughout the entire evening. Our school building will be closed on this night; if you need to use the restroom, please use the restrooms by the Performance Space.

When your family has completed the journey, please leave promptly and peacefully to make room for arriving families.

Questions? Please reach out to your child’s teacher.
